So…because I don’t have a report to write this weekend I’ve had some
time to ponder and reflect on stuff (and read my mail)- I thought I’d
share some stuff that came to the fore of my mind again now when reading
a newsletter.
Since the early days of playing competitive sport (in those days it was
paintball) I’ve always been astounded as to the intensity of the
emotions involved when you win and when you lose. Particularly how when
you are on a losing streak (or your personal game just sucks) it’s
really tough to drag yourself out of that and come back kicking ass. I
hate to lose…I really hate it…

I’ve spoken before on how I like some of Simon T Bailey’s stuff and his
general leetnesses…he has some gems…
This one, on rational vs emotional commitment is quite leet and touches
on a discussion we had over lunch…
-snip-
You might be wondering about the difference between rational and
emotional commitment.
Rational commitment is the “what†that you agree to give an organization
when youâ€re hired: your time, talent and energy in exchange for
financial compensation, professional development opportunities and the
chance to fulfill your career ambitions.
OK.. so part one of our pauldotcom interview has hit the interwebs.. it was fun and involved a power failure and a dog that chewed through charl’s microphone cable about 15 minutes before the interview started..
My thoughts on it were best expressed earlier on irc..

12:04 <+MH> i sounded (cleverer/less annoying/less nasal) in my head..
12:04 <+MH> apparently hearing ur own voice through ur teeth explains (3).. (1) and (2) i suspect are just mild delusions..

Something we preach very strongly in our training is the importance of
an understanding of the underlying technology / application / issues,
and being able to dig into the core of an issue, not just try a trick or
two and move on. Sadly, most people don’t see it this way.
It’s also somewhere between sad and frustrating for me that there seems
to be an over-abundance of so-called “experts” in our field. While this
isn’t an issue for those who have a deep understanding, the fact of the
matter is that for many of our customers, their key competence is their
respective industry, and not information security.
We just finished presenting an HBN Bootcamp and an HBN Combat Edition in Lausanne, Switzerland. A lot of people don’t know that we do this format – small courses on location worldwide. Its a different vibe to the big courses we do at Black Hat and the like, but it has some real advantages. Here’s the feedback we received – I especially like the nice things they say about me…
For those of you haven’t yet seen, the J.S.E listed SecureData bought 100% of the shares in SensePost late last week.. We have had many offers over the past few years and while the money was generally good, the fit was not.. We believe we found this fit with SecureData (formerly ERP.com) as an independent company within the SecureData stable.
The deal changes very little operationally for SensePost, with all management and directors staying exactly where we are.. We wont be moving offices (and i still wont be wearing a suit any time soon!). Our independence remains and we will remain product agnostic. (if anything it will now mean that we will get a bunch of kit to break from/for SecureData :> ) Our reports remain privileged information between us and our clients, and our advice like always will be whatever we believe is in the customers best interests.. Both SensePost and SecureData believe that this impartiality is important and we would not be going forward with the deal without this being agreed on in spirit and on paper..
SensePost is an exciting & dynamic young company with strong values &
a world vision. We specialize in high-end technical security services
& we’re looking for exceptional people to help grow our world-class
team. If you’d like to be part of a relaxed, inspired team where your
work is valued & appreciation for your work is visibly demonstrated,
where opportunities to learn abound & innovation is encouraged, then
why not join us at SensePost?
